WELLNESS

Improving our longevity is just one reason for the growing interest in something called Wellness . Fueled by the baby boom population, wellness care is our only hope if we are to survive the crushing costs associated with aging and the lifestyle-induced diseases taxing our economy. But what is wellness care?

Look up "health" in Dorland's Medical Dictionary and you'll find that health is a state of "Optimum mental, physical and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmities."

True health is when you're "working" right (well-being) mentally, physically and socially. So if you go to a doctor for medicine to eliminate an ache or a pain, what you'll receive isn't health care. It's sick care. If you feel the early signs of a cold coming on and you take some Echinacea and Vitamin C, that's sickness care.

If you experience and allergic response to cat dander and you take a homeopathic remedy to alleviate the symptoms, that's sickness care.

These responses may be better than ingesting some harsh, liver-taxing over-the-counter chemical or submitting to risky surgery, but they are interventions that only alleviate symptoms and thus have little to do with health care.

At the other end of the spectrum, let's say you get an upset stomach and begin vomiting after eating improperly prepared food. Obviously you don't feel very good, but your body is having a healthy response. Thus, vomiting, fevers, coughing and sneezing can be signs you're healthy and responding appropriately to your environment!

Confused? If all this seem disorienting, consider this health continuum:

I--------------------I-------------------I

                                           Sick                   Not Sick             Well

In short, wellness is something that lies beyond merely feeling good. This is a new way of thinking for those of us who grew up assuming that health is about being symptom-free.

OPTIMIZING OURSELVES MENTALLY

Bet you didn't think that taking a night class at the local college as an action step towards wellness. Consider the many other ways we can improve and stretch our mental capabilities. Reading. Pursuing hobbies. Listening to new ideas. Taking risks. Visiting art galleries, museums and attending cultural events. Maintaining a positive mental attitude. Getting the proper rest. Bouncing ideas off a mentor. Even exercising can sharpen your mind and optimize your mental capacity. Rather than passively watching TV, use your imagination and actively engage the world through your mind. These and many more action steps are part of being truly well.

OPTIMIZING OURSELVES PHYSICALLY

Most of us can see how important it is to be physically fit if we want to be well. That doesn't mean we have to live at the gym. For most of us it can be as simple as 20 minutes of brisk walking every other day. Swimming and bicycling can be equally helpful. When we maintain our roper weight, not only do we look good and feel good, but we enjoy a sense of personal power that enhances everything else we do. In the same way we must feed our minds to optimize our mental capacity we must also feed our bodies the raw materials it needs to build, repair and become all that we can be. Most of us can eat better and eat less and discover new, higher states of energy and well-being.

OPTIMIZING OURSELVES SOCIALLY

The only way we experience the world is through our nervous system. If it is compromised by vertebral subluxations, we are unable to be all that we can. Just ask a spouse with migraine headaches, a parent with chronic leg pain or a child with asthma. Physical, chemical and emotional stresses to our nervous system prevent us from sharing our ideas in front of a group of people, giving our time and talent to clubs, civic organizations and worthy causes. Besides regular chiropractic check-ups, optimal social well-being means maintaining our self-esteem, investing our money in socially responsible ways, keeping our word, valuing or personal integrity, admitting our mistakes and being our authentic true self.

What is wellness? It is a constellation of many things that help us to know that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. That we are capable of being much more than we are. It's what Nelson Mandela hinted at after 25 years in prison, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure, it is our light not our darkness that most frightens us".
