Dealing with a Midlife Crisis

Midlife Crisis is between the ages of 35-75 depending on who you talk to! Some factors that contribute to this can be worries with relationships, kids playing up, leaving home or even moving back home, aging sick parents, financial hardships, job losses and retirement worries.

Some people choose to stay in the dissatisfied life they have lead for years. They in the same job with the same routine, over committing with kids and family, gaining weight slowly (a couple of kgs per year), holidaying at the same place and time each year. Finding apathy for day to day life with no light and little laughter.

Others find this as a time to be the person they have always dreamt of. Quitting a dissatisfying job to pursue a dream career, buying a sports car (because now they can afford to). They learn to say no…often…and find they now have the time to take part in the latest 8 week challenge at the gym, never feeling healthier. They travel, and take part in death – defying acts like skydiving. They have time to spend reminiscing with friends about the good old times, lots of laughter comes into their lives. They may embark on a spiritual journey, never feeling so at peace. Suddenly the midlife crisis doesn’t sound so bad after all!

5 ways to handle midlife crisis:

1. Come face to face with aspiration and achievements. Your dreams may not have come true. It easy to feel like a failure, but look at your childhood dreams, look how unrealistic they were to start with. Why not look at your legacy, write your life story or build a sculpture, something that will last for generations. Never compare yourself to others. Write a new mission statement and new goals. The secret isn’t in how you succeed professionally, it’s to drop the pretense to please others and set yourself free.

2. Are you always rushing to get it all done? It’s time to slow down. Live each day interacting with nature, kind thoughts and kind words with people and beautiful imperfections of our lives. No need to fix it to make it right, or force it so it fits in with our goals, just let it be. Today we interact with other humans 1/20 less than we did in 1988 – FB, computer games, swiping at the service stations. Listen to your family and friends, not just try and work out what you want to say next, actually listen. Call your parents!

3. Cut out what you don’t need. This comes in the form of technology, difficult and depleting friendships, the investment property, perfectionism. It could also come in the form of creating your own stress. Turn if OFF! Yes, that includes your head. DON’T OVERCOMMIT.

4. Your ability to sleep changes. This is usually hormonal whether it’s the sex hormones or stress hormones. This is the time of your life you can cut out the alcohol and caffeine and enjoy foods with a lovely chemical called tryptophan, it’s found in bananas, oats, milk and honey. Sounds like lovely dessert options to me, not breakfast!

5. Your metabolism can slow down as you age! Calories in must be less than calories out. Your hormones can wreak havoc. Here at Coastal Chiropractic we can check your hormones – we are talking about excess or depletion in adrenal, cortisol, estrogen, progesterone levels, insulin levels and thyroid. Your imbalance can be caused by a change in chemistry, emotional imbalance and misalignments of the spine where the nerve to the gland is compromised. If you know the cause you are able to balance it. Remember the body is a self healing / self repairing mechanism. Feeling tired, irritable, lack luster, gaining weight…this can wall be due to hormonal changes. If you are unsure of whether a food is good or not, ask yourself one question. “Did the hunter gatherers eat it?”

If your life is not congruent to your genetic potential you need to look at changing your environment. We haven’t evolved much within our bodies over the last 200 years. Do we eat and run like the aboriginals did here 200 years ago…no…it’s not rocket science.

If your blood pressure is over 140/80 you’re not the defect. You have a perfect self repairing mechanism that’s working hard in response to your environmental stress – Don’t change you with medication…change your environment! Don’t be afraid of the midlife afraid of the midlife HEALTH crisis.

Getting older may feel like an inconvenience but we can look at it as a wake-up call, improve our health, embrace our silly side and our inner wise owl.

Use your Midlife Crisis to propel yourself onto the right path. Book in for a thorough examination with us today, because your body needs to come with you throughout the second half of your life!

Discomforts During Pregnancy or Breech Presentation

The Webster Technique

Whether it’s your first baby or your fourth, we are always learning. Welcome to our blog on babies and chiropractic, pregnancy and birth, some of this information you may know already but have added some incredibly valuable things you may have never read before.

Pregnancy creates some amazing changes to our body!  One of these important changes is the release of the hormone RELAXIN which along with the growth of the baby contributes to big changes in the shape of our spines. The spine is vital as it houses our nervous system which in turn directs our bodies. Misalignment may cause many uncomfortable symptoms such as headaches, excessive fatigue, nausea, reflux, back pain, neck pain and many others.

Structural alignment may also encourage great positioning for baby and optimal birthing. Breech babies may also benefit from the Webster Technique.

What is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique helps balance the pelvic muscles and ligaments. It can assist with a breech presentation. It should be started as soon as your baby is in the breech position or before 35 weeks for the best results.

The Webster Technique is a safe technique that may help with some common complaints throughout pregnancy. Mums stop at nothing to ensure baby’s health during a pregnancy and after birth this naturally continues! With our extensive training on pregnancy and ongoing education on prenatal and postnatal care, you will feel at peace with your decision for Chiropractic care.

There is also a fabulous website that we recommend for mums to be visit –

Below is a link to an abstract from the peer reviewed Journal of Manupulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) on a study regarding the effectiveness of the Webster Technique for the correction of breech presentation.

Is Chiropractic Safe or Effective?

Chiropractic works!

Chiropractor Care works! Or else we simply wouldn’t be around or sustainable. Chiropractic is an EVIDENCE-based intervention for spinal care. We are regulated through APRHA and adhere to the code of conduct. AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) are responsible for implementing national registration and ensuring continuing accreditation for Chiropractors. They also regulate Pharmacology, Medicine, Psychology, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery. Chiropractors study at least 5 years for a Masters degree in Chiropractic.

Chiropractic is safe!

Let’s put things into perspective. In 2010 Chiropractors received 41 complaints. There is also some fear surrounding risk of stroke with chiropractor adjustment. Chiropractic and incidence of stroke in the range of 1 or 2 in 1 million to 1 in 5 million.

If Chiropractors see 215,000 consultations within Australia in a week it just shows…well it must work and it must be safe. Cassidy Et al (1) looked at any differences between a stroke following a chiropractic visit and a G.P. visit. There wasn’t any greater risk leaving the Chiropractic clinic.

So why all the “bad press” especially around Paediatric Chiropractic. If Doyle (2011) (2) found no serious adverse reaction to chiropractic published in peer reviewed literature between 1992 and 2010 and no deaths were associated with Chiropractic Paediatric care…so why all this fear?

Ultimately it’s our unique individualism which gives rise to our own belief systems…thank goodness. And thank goodness for our ability to voice our opinions either through television, print or internet.

We are inviting you to write your comments below on this very emotive issue. What experiences have you had?

Is it Possible to Ask Your Body to Lose Weight?

Losing weight is probably the most Googled health problem today.

The reality is when you peel back the layers of each new “miracle cure”, the answers are always the same:

  • eat well
  • eat less
  • exercise more.

So why aren’t you losing weight if you know this?

At Coastal Chiropractic & Wellbeing we aren’t interested in the latest quick fix or detox, we’re interested in you! For example did you know a through consultation and examination will pinpoint the exact cause or causes of your weight gain?

That’s because we find the reasons why you can’t lose weight. This can include long term adrenal stress, increasing cortisol in the body, which in turn imbalances your sex hormones and create weight gain, especially around the stomach. Often, this can be due to emotional stress, or a simple chemical imbalance which we pinpoint and then restore you back to health naturally.

Other causes include subclinical hypothyroidism, food intolerances, hormonal imbalances, blood sugar imbalances, emotional eating, and deficiency in nutrients creating cravings. Cause removed and bingo! The diet and exercise starts to work, and you start to lose the weight!

How Applied Kinesiology can treat Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is described as pain felt in muscles with sleep disorders, fatigue, headaches, lack of clarity and possible bowel dysfunction. If you google the term you’ll find there are no specific treatments for this debilitating condition, but we say RUBBISH!

Fibromyalgia is an example of a chronic condition which can only really be treated multi dimensionally. There is a clear physical component, misalignments of the spine irritating nerves creating muscular aches and pain. The chemical component is addressed in three phases, the first line of defense is to decrease pain then to address the cause, and Applied Kinesiology can pinpoint exactly what nutrients and herbs will be effective for you.

Your fibromyalgia is not the same as the textbook so why treat yourself in such a way? Chemically we test for Magnesium deficiency, toxic loads, adrenal fatigue, anxiety, food sensitivities, bowel dysfunction, and energy production within the mitochondria of the cell.

Lastly fibromyalgia is a chronic condition, so there will also be an emotional component. NET (neuro emotional technique) can identify the stress and where it is coming from in your life. It’s not psychology, it’s the direct removal using the technique of the stress from your body. The philosophy stays the same, removal of the interference which is stopping your individual body repairing and functioning optimally.

Wellness is vital in fibromyalgia, and we can give you tools to be willing to respect your mind and body with education. Because when you are willing – anything is possible!

Cancer: The Devastating Diagnosis

Cancer is different, it creates fear due to uncertainty and confusion on what’s out there for treatment. Sure, heart disease claims more lives but it’s that lack of understanding that drives the fear which in turn can drive the cancer.

As your healthcare practitioner we can lessen that fear and turn it into understanding which itself turns it to willingness to make changes towards empowerment! Many questions need to be asked verbally and through Applied Kinesiology to provide a specific treatment protocol which addresses diet, lifestyle, nutrients and stress.

Conventional approaches see it as “a war against cancer” to kill the cancer. Cancer cells vary dramatically to normal healthy cells and therefore the treatment often has to be multifactorial. Immunity, inflammation and stress are three key factors. Cancer loves sugar and change in diet can create unfavorable conditions for cancer literally starving the cell and favouring the growth of normal healthy cells!

We want to work alongside your oncologist and support you. Please contact us for an appointment, your empowerment through education and understanding starts today!
